In India, they call these events Jallikattu. In English they are known simply as Bull Taming Events. While they are done differently from Bullfighting or Running of the Bulls events in Hispanic countries, in principle they are the same – the bull gets… well, bullied.
I’m sure Indian bulls go through as much hell during Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu as Spanish bulls do during Encierro in Pamplona, except that at the end of the day, Jallikattu bulls are not arbitrarily slaughtered. Still, it is a controversial event with great levels of cruelty to animals. Sometimes though, it’s the bulls who get their last laugh.
In our pictures below, one of the participant in a Bull Taming Event got his thumb caught in a rope as bull pulled on it with all its strength. The rope wrapped around the thumb and ripped it right off the man’s hand.
